Children assembled on Day 1 of distribution of Milk

We have successfully started one more project of the Jeevani Milk Scheme in the Government Elementary School in Alagramam. 3 days are over and we look forward to the next few weeks with anticipation.

Day 1 we had a surprise function organised by the school Head Master. He had invited the Hr. Sec school Head Master, Ex- President of the Panchayat and the Block Education Officer. Three things really stood out for me that day:

Firstly that the family of Mr C S Shankar Iyer has a lot of goodwill. The people in the village trust and respect the family name and it came home to me that we must take this privilege and use it to contribute to the village – to bring in positive inputs slowly… This is a first step in that direction.

Second, the Head Master is a very lovely, well read, informed and enthusiastic man. He said, “இந்த குழந்தைகள்தான் ௭ங்கள் கடவுள்”. I feel he is a wonderful person to work with and lean on in this process.

Third, the severe undernourishment of these children hit home when we took the height and weight. There wasn’t much difference between some class 1 and class 5 children! Most were under 20 kgs, some class 3 kids were as low as 17.5 kgs! It was shocking!

I would like to end on a note of hope. That this simple intervention has already benefited and is continuing to benefit 100s of children and we too can hope for improvement in the health status of these children.

Last but not the least, without the complete trust that my family has put in me and in Sanjeevani,  this is not possible. They have embraced the idea, made it their own, and supported in every way- physical, networking, financial and most importantly, I can feel their good wishes carrying this along.
